Welcome to America!

Letzte Woche Dienstag bzw.

#day1

Hello from Athens, Georgia (from Helena & Sarah)!

Our student exchange to the USA started yesterday. Our group of 15 students and 2 teachers met at 2:30 pm at the train station in Gütersloh. We all arrived with one big suitcase and a lot of excitement.

We took the train to Essen and changed to another train to Düsseldorf main train station. When we had arrived in Düsseldorf we took the underground. After a short walk we arrived at the “Jugendherberge” at 7 pm. This whole trip was exhausting but we all were excited
We went to our rooms (3 rooms for the girls, 2 rooms for the boys). Then we went to an Italian restaurant and ate pizza or pasta. It was very delicious.

Then we all went to bed. We got up at the morning at about 5 am. Then we got ready, took lunch packages and went to the airport. After arriving at the airport by train, we first dropped off our bags and then had a break to eat something from our packed lunch. After that, we had to go through all the security checks, but they all went well, so that in the end we were all together on the plane. The takeoff was very pleasant and it was easy to handle the pressure on the ears. Since the flight lasted 9 hours, we got food and were able to watch movies, play games, listen to music and much more. In other words, everyone was busy and satisfied. About an hour and a half before landing, however, there was some turbulence. The plane shook a bit and the seatbelt sign lit up. After a few minutes, everything was quiet again. But it didn’t stay that way, because shortly before landing there was more turbulence, but this time it was more violent. Many of us became nauseous and some of us had to struggle a lot with the pressure. Fortunately, we all landed unharmed and got through all the security checks at the airport in Atlanta without any problems and we got our suitcases back. We were greeted warmly in front of the airport and picked up by a typical Athens Academy school bus and taken to Athens Academy. And then it was finally time. Finally we could meet our exchange students and their families in person. Everyone was so nice and welcomed us totally. Each of us spent the rest of the evening with his host family. We are excited about the other days that await us!
